UNDRESS & UNLEARN – POETRY OF LEBOHANG NOVA MASANGO

Lehohang aka Su$ie Somalia aka @King Nova Miu is a beautiful young intellectual poet coming up in South Africa. After finding out about her through AfroPOP! I had to take a listen. Come on, this girl won Queen of the Mic, but refuses the gender exception and calls herself King (yes, please!). What’s more she reps reading really hard, and uses that exposure to add a certain responsibility to the power of a poet.

The piece “To Do List for Africa” literally had me shed a tear around 2:25. Doubling as a political manifesto and a lesson in self-love this poem is a tool for strength on both an individual and community level.

Her command of words, the mic, and content is the kind of thing that makes me want to read and want to show my love. Finding online examples of her work is no easy task, but it is well worth it. You can really tell that she has dealt with some heavy emotions too, and that she isn’t afraid to call it out and speak to it. On the other hand, this girl knows how to have fun and is always stylin’. So catch her on tumblr, holla on twitter, and who knows? You may just come across poetic bits to help you face your own deepest anxieties about love (or just pictures of her remixing Danny Brown 😉 ).
